Microsoft is gradually expanding Copilot beyond an AI chatbot and turning it into something closer to a built-in Windows assistant.

One of the latest additions, currently rolling out to some Windows 11 users, is PC Insights. Instead of answering general questions using information from the web, Copilot can—with the user's permission—read system information directly from Windows and explain it in plain language.

The feature represents another step toward Microsoft's broader vision of AI-assisted computing. Rather than asking users to navigate Task Manager, Device Manager, or Windows Settings, Copilot aims to answer questions such as:

  • "Why is my PC running slowly?"
  • "How much storage do I have left?"
  • "Is my antivirus working?"
  • "Can my computer run this game?"

While this could make Windows more accessible for many users, it also introduces discussions around privacy, resource usage, and whether AI should become part of routine system management.


From Chatbot to System Assistant

Until recently, Copilot mainly acted as a conversational AI connected to Microsoft's cloud services.

Its answers about Windows were based on documentation and general knowledge rather than the actual state of a user's computer.

PC Insights changes that model.

With explicit user permission, Copilot can access Windows APIs to retrieve information such as:

For newer users, however, the feature could lower the learning curve.

If high memory usage is detected, Copilot may recommend closing applications or freeing storage, but the user still performs those actions.

Microsoft has also stated that access to system information is permission-based, and users can choose whether Copilot asks every time or receives ongoing authorization.

That approach reflects Microsoft's effort to balance convenience with user control, although how comfortable people feel sharing device information with AI will likely vary.


The Resource Usage Debate

One discussion surrounding PC Insights has little to do with diagnostics themselves.

Some reviewers observed that the current Copilot application consumes a noticeable amount of memory while idle, particularly after Microsoft transitioned the consumer version back to a web-based architecture with its own embedded browser components.

For some users, this raises an obvious question:

Should a tool designed to explain system performance also minimize its own resource usage?

The practical impact depends on the device.

On systems with 32GB or more of memory, the additional RAM usage may have little effect during everyday work.

Privacy Remains an Important Consideration

Whenever AI gains access to local system information, privacy becomes part of the conversation.

Microsoft says PC Insights only accesses hardware and system information after receiving user permission, and it states that personal files and device information are not used to train AI models. According to Microsoft's documentation, conversation history may still be processed depending on the user's settings, but system metadata is handled separately.

For many users, the permission model may provide sufficient reassurance.

Others may prefer to leave access disabled unless they specifically need diagnostic assistance.

A Different Way to Think About Windows Support

Windows has been able to display those statistics for years.
